Curator and Director
DEDICATION
Mirek passed away unexpectedly in February 2006 of a heart attack at the age of 69.
He is survived by his wife and two children.
Mirek was born, raised, and educated in Warsaw, Poland where he received his first
degree in Radio and Communication. He then completed
a degree at the University of Warsaw in the Faculty of Mathematics. In 1970 he came
to Montreal, Canada, and in 1979 he and his family
moved to Coquitlam, British Columbia. Mirek then pursued a doctoral degree in
Educational Psychology at the University of British Columbia.
Although circumstances did not allow Mirek to complete his doctoral degree,
his work enabled him to obtain a teaching certificate. In 1983,
Mirek became one of the first Polish immigrant high school math/physics teachers
in British Columbia.
Mirek was known as a very generous, charismatic, and creative man. He cared deeply
about education and was passionate about mathematics and
the arts. In 1998 the family moved to Port Moody, City of the Arts, and Mirek was
inspired to create a fine arts facility.
In 2002 Mirek rented an industrial space in Port Moody that he converted into the
"Rocky Point Art Gallery and Studios".
Although the
gallery is no longer in operation, this site is dedicated to the memory of its
founder and curator, Mr. Mirek Gajecki.
